"A tremendous honour, for myself, club and county", was how Shane Fennell described his feeling as he received a phone call from Croke Park representatives earlier this week to notify him of his selection on the Ireland Squad for the upcoming Hurling/Shinty International Series against Scotland. Following two trials, where players were put through their paces by John Meyler and Michael Walsh, Shane was selected alongside 17 other Irishmen to represent their country in the prestigious series. "I couldn't believe it when I got the phone call", explained Shane. "This is really a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and is truly the ultimate honour in any hurlers career. To pull on the Irish jersey...the hairs are standing on the back of my neck just thinking about it now!", enthused the Knockbridge man. Shane will set off next Friday, October 19th, Scotland bound, in preparation for the first game in the series. "We play against the Scotland side in Inverness at lunchtime on Saturday the 20th, before the return fixture the following Saturday (27th) in Ennis, which is part of the Ireland/Scotland Festival Weekend. Both games are live on TG4 which will add even more to the spectacle", added Shane. Although Shane is the only Louth man on the panel, (Ronan Byrne narrowly missed out on a call-up), there will be a familiar face amongst the Irish set-up. "An old teammate of mine, Joe Clarke, from Castletown Geoghan also got the call-up, as luck may have it. It's ten years since we both played together on the same pitch, so I'm really looking forward to catching up with Joe again! It's a real double bonus for Castletown Geoghan too though, a real honour for the club", added Shane. While Paul Dunne was the last man from the Wee County to don the Irish jersey at the International Hurling/Shinty Series, Shane's call-up is just reward for his efforts this year and over the past number of years. "It's a real privilege and honour to represent Louth", outlined Shane. "It is a very difficult panel to break into and Ronan Byrne was really unlucky not to make it too. It just highlights how much Louth hurling has come on and I'm going to do my best for the entire county and country. I really can't wait to make the trip!". Shane Fennell
Louth GAA would like to take this opportunity to offer our sincerest congratulations to Shane on his selection for the Ireland Squad for the upcoming Hurling/Shinty
International V Scotland. We have no doubt that he will represent his family, club, county and country with pride. Good Luck Shane!
