Wexford and Cork set for Semple Stadium showdown

Wexford and Cork will renew rivalries this coming Sunday (May 6th) in Semple Stadium, Thurles in the Irish Daily Star National Camogie League Final at 2.00pm as part of a double header fixture with the GAA Allianz National Hurling League Final between Cork and Kilkenny, throwing in at 4.00pm.

Meath and Derry will meet in the Irish Daily Star Division Two Final at Páirc Tailteann at 2.45pm, also on Sunday. It is preceded by the clash of Meath and London in the Christy Ring Championship at 1.00pm.

President of the Camogie Association Aileen Lawlor and Peter Sweeney of the Irish Daily Star were joined by Wexford captain Karen Atkinson; Cork skipper Julia White, Derry’s Karen Kielt and Jane Dolan of Meath at Croke Park this afternoon (Tuesday, May 1st) ahead of this weekend’s finals. Wexford are bidding for four-in-a row league titles while Meath are aiming to complete a clean sweep of league crowns following on from their division three triumph in 2011.

Speaking at this afternoon’s photo-call President Aileen Lawlor said:

“This weekend’s Irish Daily Star League Division One and Two finals are eagerly awaited with four top teams in action and plenty at stake for all sides. Wexford are bidding for a record four-in-a row titles and face one of their greatest rivals who will be intent on securing their first league crown since 2007. Meath and Derry will be anxious to secure a Division Two title and with it promotion to the top tier.

We are delighted that both finals form part of two excellent double header fixtures with the GAA and further demonstrates the strong working relationship between both organisations.

Sunday’s finals will provide Gaelic games fans with a great opportunity to come out and support their sporting stars, male and female, and also strengthen the natural affiliation between the hurling and camogie communities. Following on from the launch of the National Hurling Development Plan in February the joint billing of hurling and camogie ties is another example of a strong desire to further develop and promote both games and a great example of how that can happen.”

Eoin Brannigan, Sports Editor of the Irish Daily Star said:

“This weekend’s finals mark the culmination of a number of months of intense and top class camogie.

The meeting of Cork and Wexford, two of the country’s leading sides is one all camogie fans are looking forward too and their positioning as part of a double header fixture with the GAA Allianz National Hurling League Final provides the players with an even bigger audience.

The same is true of the meeting of Derry and Meath with plenty at stake for both sides. The Irish Daily Star is delighted to be associated with such a great competition and to provide leading coverage of the camogie leagues.”
