eircom introduces first Interactive GAA Football Championship Timeline

GAA stories take centre stage

Mickey Harte, Colm ‘The Gooch’ Cooper, Jack O’Shea and Brian Mullins share favourite GAA stories to celebrate launch

eircom, proud sponsors of the GAA All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, has marked the launch of the second year of its sponsorship by developing the country’s first ever online interactive GAA Timeline.

Created for Ireland’s many GAA fans, all of whom have their own great stories to tell, the eircom GAA Timeline celebrates favourite GAA Football Championship stories from 1885 through to the present day and allows users to upload and share their all-time favourite GAA stories on one simple platform, www.experiencemore.ie

The celebration of GAA Football Championship stories is at the heart of the eircom interactive GAA Timeline. So, it was fitting that eircom invite GAA Director General, Páraic Duffy and a number of eircom GAA ambassadors - Mickey Harte, Colm “The Gooch” Cooper, Brian Mullins and Jack O’Shea – to gather in GAA HQ, the centre of so many great GAA moments and stories over the years, to share some of their own favourite anecdotes around moments which feature in the eircom GAA Timeline.

Mickey Harte chose to relive Tyrone’s emotional 2003 All-Ireland Final victory over reigning champions, Armagh, while GAA legends, Jack O’Shea and Brian Mullins spoke affectionately about the 1977 ‘Clash of the Titans’ between Dublin and Kerry. Moving to more recent GAA history between the two counties, Colm ‘The Gooch’ Cooper and Ciaran Whelan spoke about their memories of Kerry’s sweeping aside of Dublin in the 2009 All-Ireland quarter final.

While GAA fans are invited to visit experiencemore.ie to access the eircom GAA Timeline and relive some of the most iconic moments in GAA Football Championship history past and present, eircom is also inviting fans to upload and share photos, videos and comments which represent their own favourite stories. This rich combination of the iconic with the personal, eircom hopes, will present a valuable and entertaining collection of stories around GAA Football Championship moments over the years which will continue to evolve as more people interact with the Timeline.

In addition, eircom’s interactive online platform has a number of specific features to help GAA enthusiasts brush up on their GAA football knowledge. With categories such as ‘Did you Know?’, ‘Heroes’ and ‘Fan Favourites’ to scroll through, visitors to experiencemore.ie will be guaranteed to walk away with new found pearls of GAA Football Championship wisdom.

Storytellers around the country will have a strong incentive to upload their stories as those who successfully add to the Timeline will be in with a chance to win match tickets for the GAA Football Championship, courtesy of eircom.

While all content uploaded will be put forward for consideration, content must relate to GAA Football Championship either nationally or locally for the chance to be successfully added to the Timeline. Content will also be screened to ensure it is appropriate and, of course, accurate.

As well as exploring the Timeline, visitors to experiencemore.ie can enjoy Mickey Harte and Ciaran Whelan’s weekly blogs, get full Championship fixtures and results and check out coaching videos with our eircom GAA ambassadors.

Commenting at the launch, GAA Director General, Páraic Duffy, said, “On behalf of the GAA, we are delighted to join eircom at the launch of the GAA Football Championship Timeline, the first interactive timeline of its kind. The stories and memories which GAA fans are all too happy to share demonstrate the passion that people have for the game across the country and are an integral part of our Championship success every year. We are delighted that eircom has developed an innovative interactive timeline that will provide a permanent and evolving home for these stories for GAA fans during the course of this year’s Football Championship and beyond.”

According to Carolan Lennon, Chief Marketing Officer, eircom, “As an official sponsor of the GAA Football Championship it is really important for eircom to add some fun and enjoyment through technology to GAA fans all over the country. GAA fans and their stories are at the very centre of the All Ireland Football Championship and our interactive GAA Timeline presents a simple and flexible way for fans to share their stories with each other. We are genuinely excited about this innovation and we look forward to watching fans interact with it throughout the course of the Championship.”

KILKENNY hurling legend DJ Carey has spoken for the first time about his recent health scare and moved to assure fans that he is on the road to recovery.

The five-time All-Ireland senior medallist reveals, in an exclusive interview with Leinster GAA TV, that he is now “feeling good” and advises viewers to undergo a medical check up on an annual basis.

Speaking in a one-on-one interview with Jackie Cahill, nine-time Allstar Carey admits that he got “a little bit of a fright” but is now “feeling good.”

Carey added that “there is a bit to go yet and it will take a bit of time” before he returns to full health.

Carey also thanked his legion of loyal supporters and friends for their recent messages of goodwill and support.

He says that people getting in touch to wish him well at a difficult time meant a lot to him and were much appreciated.

Looking fit and relaxed, Carey recommends that people should “get a check up once a year”.

In the first of a four-part exclusive interview, Carey speaks about his glittering playing career and charts his rise from a young boy who professed an early preference for football to his formative experiences as a hurler.

The first part of this exclusive Leinster GAA TV interview, part of the Leinster Legends series, will air on Thursday morning, May 24.

The schedule for the 4 interviews is:

Part 1: Thursday 24 May

Part 2: Saturday 26 May

SKODA unveiled as the new sponsor of Newstalk’s GAA Coverage

17th May, 2012:

Newstalk 106-108 fm today launched its coverage of the 2012 GAA All-Ireland Senior Championships and announced SKODA as the station’s new GAA broadcast sponsor. Newstalk sport-veterans, Ger Gilroy and Dave McIntyre, revealed an all-star panel that will join the Newstalk sports team in delivering the best GAA coverage and analysis available on national radio – for the second year running.

Newstalk Launch
At the launch are, from left, Tyrone's Sean Cavanagh, Newstalk's Ger Gilroy, Kildare's Dermot Earley, and Newstalk's Dave McIntyre.

The Newstalk sports team – Newstalk Sport Saturday / Sunday and Off the Ball – will be assisted throughout the season by a host of GAA sporting legends. Among those giving their expert analysis of the GAA All-Ireland Football Championship will be Darragh Ó Sé, Colm Parkinson, Enda McNulty, Liam McHale, Conor Deegan, Kevin Cassidy, David Brady, Eugene McGee and Oisin McConville. The Newstalk sports team will also bring their views on the hurling action over the summer, joined by Jamesie O'Connor, Daithí Regan, Ollie Canning and Derek Lyng.

The 2011 GAA All-Ireland Senior Championships season marked a key milestone in Irish broadcasting. For the first time in GAA history, a broadcaster outside the state-run body was awarded exclusive national radio commentary rights. During their inaugural year of GAA broadcasting, Newstalk provided GAA fans, across the country, with an exciting and fresh alternative to the staid coverage of old.

Speaking at today’s launch, Ger Gilroy, Sports Editor at Newstalk 106-108 fm, said: “The Championship season is upon us once again and we're delighted to be back in the thick of it. 2011 was hugely important for Newstalk Sport as we made our debut and proved to the nation that we could add our voice to the GAA season with fresh insight, a new commentary style and brilliant in-depth analysis. We were overwhelmed by the response from the GAA community and can't wait for this year's big games. You can be sure that the Newstalk sports team and extended panel of star analysts will deliver the best information, entertainment and analysis along with laughter, drama and controversy, throughout the 2012 season.”

Newstalk 106-108 fm will exclusively cover 20 games including Provincial finals, qualifiers in both codes and All Ireland quarter finals.

Newstalk Launch
At the launch are Kildare's Dermot Earley, left, and Tyrone's Sean Cavanagh

Also speaking at the launch, Raymond Leddy, Head of Marketing SKODA Ireland, said: “We are thrilled to announce that SKODA is Newstalk’s new GAA broadcast sponsor. The station has continually set new standards for sports broadcast coverage and analysis over the last number of years and we were particularly impressed by their GAA coverage in what was their debut season in 2011.  Over the last number of years SKODA has been steadily building its GAA sponsorship portfolio including our sponsorship of Tipperary GAA and at a local level through our network of dealerships. Today’s announcement is another significant milestone for the SKODA brand in Ireland and we are looking forward to working with Newstalk on an exciting programme of events this Championship season.”

As part of SKODA’s sponsorship of the GAA coverage, Newstalk & SKODA will be doing five live broadcasts with the Newstalk Sport Saturday team, presented by Ger Gilroy, from local GAA clubs around the country. There will be something for everyone with Oisin McConville giving football lessons to the kids whilst the Newstalk Sports Team will be giving full analysis of the GAA Championships ahead.
